    Tips for new parents

Tips to Help Develop Naturals Sleep Patterns for Babies
This also helps mom and dad sleep

Thank you to Similac and Nurse Barb's suggestions, these are great suggestions:

One of the first things I always tell new moms is to lose the guilt! It’s inevitable for new parents to feel nervous, unsure and often guilty when caring for their infant – especially when it comes to sleep. I’m constantly reassuring both moms and dads to go with their gut feeling on all fronts and follow their infant’s lead. If your newborn tends to fall asleep in his swing or rocker – go with it! Not allowing yourself to feel guilty during the first few months will only help your baby acclimate to a schedule. Typically, confidence and a bit of relaxation will follow.

Moms can maintain their baby’s natural sleep patterns and overall health with a proper feeding schedule. By establishing both day and night feeding routines that follow your infant’s natural hunger cues, you are helping your baby receive the nourishment that will support growth and development. When my patients ask about feeding with formula, I recommend Similac, which offers a wide range of specialized formulas and products all designed to support baby’s natural growth and development process by providing excellent nutrition no matter what time of day or night.

Try to remain cool, calm and collected during the first few months of your baby’s life. Infants’ are on sensory overdrive and are attuned to both anxiety and fear. Mood, touch and sound are all stimulators and can interrupt your newborn’s sleep cycle. Keeping a calm atmosphere can help your baby find his natural sleep cycle.

I often tell new moms to turn off the TV! Feeding time is often a good opportunity for mom to kick up her feet and unwind. Use this time to connect with your baby and avoid your regular relaxation routine like flipping on the TV. The light and noise can distract your newborn and interrupt his eating.

Bath time does not always need to take place before bedtime. Some infants are extremely agitated from a bath, regardless of the calming scents, soft sounds and soothing touch you use. If you notice your baby is relaxed and calm without a bath before bedtime, go with it! Changing the bathtime routine can make the overall experience more enjoyable for both mom and baby. This can also help your newborn develop daytime and nighttime routines.

    Meal Planning for busy people

There are so many ways you can meal plan. It really depends on your personality and schedule.  I wanted to share with you what works for me.  I work when my children are in school so I still consider myself a busy working mom. Our schedules can be crazy at times so writing down every meal for everyday just doesn't work for me.  So this is what I do:

    • I love recipes, I have a collection of recipes with basic ingredients and things I would have on hand. I will normally pick out one new recipe to try.
    • I always keep items stocked for those quick/staple meals; such as hamburgers, grilled cheese, pizza, etc.
    • On Sundays I will go through my recipes, inventory what I have, and select about 10 of them for a two week period.
    • I write down all the meals and attach the recipes to the list and keep it all in the kitchen
    • I do another quick inventory of the ingredients and if I'm missing something I will write that on the grocery list, but normally I will have almost all the ingredients.  The one new meal that I plan to make I may have to buy a few more things for. If I have to buy a couple things for a recipe that recipe will be pushed to the end of the week due to the fact that I shop on Thursdays (kids get out of school early that day).
    • Now that I have all my recipes and list ready, I will select a meal the night before so I can pull things out of the freezer if I have to, or get it ready for the slow cooker in the morning.
    • If things end up being crazy or we get home too late to cook the meal planned I will make one of my quick dinners and make the meal I had planned the following night.
    • Typically one of the nights becomes a leftover night - such as tonight.
Since I have been planning my menus this way, it is easier to make meals around our schedule. I'm not tied to a specific meal on a specific night. It has greatly reduced my stress when it comes to making dinners.

Here is a good article and meal planning guides, go to About.com for meal planning guides.  They are great.

WinCo $5 Bargain Meals - General Tso's chicken

WinCo $5 Bargain Meals - all ingredients purchased at WinCo Foods
I am happy to participate in the $5dollar dinners Bargain Meal of the Week.
For more low budget meals to go Bargain Meals and 1 trip, 1 bag, 5 dinners

     General Tso's Chicken (serves 4)

I had to share this recipe for one of my $5 (or less) dinners - all items purchased at WinCo Foods:

    Ingredients:
1 packet of Sun Bird General Tso's sauce (found in the Asian aisle) $.74 (next time I will use two packets because I like a lot of sauce)
    • The ingredients you will need to add to the packet is sugar, soy sauce, flour, oil, and water
1 lb Boneless skinless chicken $2.68
2 cups of cooked rice $.70

Cook according to the directions on the packet.  They are very easy - you will coat the chicken in flour, fry it up; mix up the remaining ingredients and then add to the chicken until well coated. Serve over rice.

My husband and I really liked it; it wasn't too spicy.  I topped it with a little red pepper flakes.  We will definitely make it again.  The packets would be great to keep on hand for a quick meal.

    Total: $4.12

Another General Tso's chicken that is all prepared for you is Hy-Top General Tso's chicken.  You will find it in the frozen section next to the Tyson chicken.  It's great and normally about $5.38.

I hear the clerk say "It's the Coupon Lady"

    I spent $3.96 and saved $24.34 at Albertson's yesterday.

I get up in line at Albertson's yesterday and I hear the clerk say "It's the Coupon Lady". How funny; that's the second time I have heard that from a clerk; they have no idea that I have the NW Coupon Lady blog. I do the majority of my shopping at WinCo, so when I go to Albertsons, Safeway, and Walgreens I always have my coupons and flier in hand.

Here is the details of yesterday's shopping trip.

2 Sun Laundry detergents on sale for $2.49, I used two $.75/1 from Sunday's insert and added it to two doublers. Totaling $1.98 for 2!

2 Covergirl pressed power. They were on sale for $3.24; I have a B1G1 of Covergirl face products and I also had $1/1 for the item I purchased, and of course I paired that with a doubler. So for two pressed powered I spent $1.24!!!

When you start to build that relationship with the store clerks they are so good when you hand them your stack of coupons.  They normally don't even question my coupons because they know I have them organized and ready to go.

Yoke's Fresh Market In Store Sale

Yoke's FF Milk Sale for $1.50 for today (2/16) only and I also spotted an instore sale of Kraft 16oz salad dressing for $1.69.  I had a coupon from a coupon book for $1/2 so I grabbed a couple bottles.  I see that Yoke's is really trying to lower their prices a bit.  I also used some of the coupons from Sunday's paper.  At the end of the week you will see what I purchased at Yoke's. It really pays to cruise through and look for in store sales.  I found several at Albertson's and Yoke's this week.

    Purex 3 in1 Laundry Sheets for $.99!!

I love when I score at Albertson's.  I went in with my coupons and Albertson's doubler coupons. I happened to go down the detergent aisle to see if All was on sale.  I found Purex 3 in 1 sheets on sale for $2.99, Wow.  I had 2 $1/1 coupons I picked up  from a blinkie somewhere, added it  to my doubler and purchased them for $.99! I have never used them before, but I thought they would be great for back laundry soap and fabric softener. They also had Sun Laundry detergent on sale for $2.49 I believe it was 110 oz.  I am going back today with my Sun coupons and more doublers that my mom gave me.  I'm hoping to pick up two for $.99 each.  The coupon says 75 loads, but I also have $.50 Sun coupon for any size so that would still be a good deal.

    Safeway Valentine's Ideas

Safeway's Conversation Hearts Cake Decorating Workshop, in stores with bakeries.
    2/12, 3-7 PM, and 2/13, 12-4 PM. Drop-ins welcome!

Valentine’s Day is not about spending money on lavish gifts, but spending time on the little things that your family will cherish forever!

Lifestyle expert, author, and Seattle budget savvy mom, Corey Colwell-Lipson has teamed up with Safeway to share her favorite heartfelt (and shaped) treats along with quality family time ideas-that maximize your time together and limit your spending!

Corey’s Tips for Planning a Family Fun Valentine’s Day:

SWAK (stamps not required) - What’s a Valentine’s Day, without receiving some Valentines? Kids love making arts and crafts, so break out the construction paper, paint, paper doilies, and glitter glue! Start by making a special “Valentine’s Day Mailbox” to keep in your family room. Recycle a shoebox, add a slit and have your kids decorate away. Throughout the weekend, your family can create special Valentine’s Day cards for each other. *Prepare for a special delivery to Sunday’s breakfast table.

“Hearty Breakfast”- Jump into the Valentine’s Day spirit by planning a special breakfast for your family. From heart shaped berry pancakes, French toast or muffins, have fun with the holiday! You can also set up a healthy yogurt parfait station with strawberry yogurt, red berries and granola. This way your kids can create their own special breakfast for mom and dad (safely away from the stove). *Set the table with a red or pink cloth and add festive decorations with some conversation hearts around each place setting.

    · Maximize Family Time- Budget-conscious moms can spend hours going from store to store to find the best Valentine’s Day deals. Instead, why not find one store that offers everything you need? For example, your local Safeway has thousands of new everyday low prices on everything from fresh baked treats, to dinner time ingredients and even beautiful bouquets (Safewayflowers.com). Have fun with younger kids by making them “lookout cupids” for the best deals on all the items you need. “X” marks the spot with Safeway’s new bright yellow shelf tags which show the old price crossed out and then the new everyday low price revealed. *When you visit Safeway.com, you can download digital coupons right onto your Club Card through the CouponLink program, saving even more time at the store!

    · Heartfelt (and shaped) Treats- Heart-shaped sugar cookies, brownies, chocolate lollipops, whatever your heart desires- all say, "I love you." Turn sweet treats into a family celebration by baking them together. Kids will have a blast decorating their edible valentines with icing and themed candies. Enjoy!

    · Home Sweet Home- Remember you don’t need to spend a lot or travel far to have fun with your loved ones. Plan a family game, movie, or trivia night and enjoy what the holiday is all about- each other!

Valentine's Day for the family - Date Night

Here we go again - another holiday.  I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day. But for the kids we always do something of course.  It's hard to find ideas that don't involve candy and little junky items that we will end up throwing out.  I try to get creative, but it's hard.  I came up with the idea for the family that could start a whole new tradition.

There are 4 of us: me, my husband, son, and daughter.  I thought about having all of us go to the same restaurant but then splitting up.  I would have a little date with my son and my daughter would have a date with my husband. It would give each child one on one time and the experience of going out on a date. It's a great way to teach them how to act when they are on a date. My daughter loves having the car door opened by my husband and having him seat her at the table (wow, wait 'til she's dating).

I'm still in a toss up if I should do anything else.  I thought about giving them a little bag with a gift card or money, but then again I want to show them you can just spend time with each other rather than always a giving gift.

What do you do for your family on Valentine's? Let me know I would love to know what people do for their kids. My husband is spoiled, so everyday is Valentine's for him.

    Chili Enchiladas

I made Cowboy Chili with tons of round steak ($1.69lb on sale) the other night, we had leftovers so the chili became enchiladas.  I love Chili Enchiladas but with my steak chili they turned out really good.

    Ingredients:

    Left over chili (~$2.50)
7 tortillas that I purchased for $1 at pack at the bread store ($.70 was used)
    2 cans Hy-Top Enchilada sauce ($1.38)
    2 1/2 cups of cheese ($1)
1/2 can olives (Lindsey olives I get for about $.50) (used $.25)

Total $5.83 and it was so good!!
