Bulk Bin Items and Prices

I gather up Winco foods prices each week to help us all save money. I am not associated with WinCo at all, I just have shopped there for many years and I know how frustrating it is that they don't have a weekly flyer - so I thought I would be the one to put one together.

PUR Water Filtration Pitcher Giveaway

PUR Water Filtration Pitcher Giveaway
(1 winner will be selected on Wednesday 1/6/10)

I was so excited to be selected to promote this wonderful clean water project. PUR would like to give one of my readers a Pure Water Filtration Pitcher.

Summit on the Summit

This coming January PUR is partnering with “Summit on the Summit” (SOTS), a celebrity climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro featuring Jessica Biel, Alexandra Cousteau and others that will raise awareness and funds for clean drinking water efforts. Find out more HERE.

4,000 children in developing countries die every day from illness and disease related to unsafe drinking water. PUR along with its not-for-profit partner, the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW), is committed to alleviating this global crisis by providing clean drinking water to those in need.

We are all about saving money and good health, by using a PUR pitcher it saves you money buy not buying bottled water, saves the planet by reducing the use of plastic, and you help out other families.

Here’s how:

• When you buy a PUR, you’re not only helping your family get clean water, but a family across the world.

• 1 System = 1 Week: For every PUR system purchase, one week of clean drinking water is provided to a child in the developing world through CSDW. To-date, CSDW has already provided 1.8 billion liters of clean water to children and their families around the world.

• You can also donate $1 and a child would receive clean water for 50 days. This would be a great donation for the 1st of the year. Show your kids this great video and the clean water packets. It’s really cool.

Why Is PUR a Smart Choice for Families?

• By simply using a PUR water filter, you will remove many of the common contaminants found in drinking water. Including: 94% of atrazine, 98% of lead and other metals, 99.9% of microbial cysts and 96-99% of pharmaceuticals.

• Switching from bottled water to filtered water and a reusable bottle can save one person up to $600 a year and eliminate up to 3,200 plastic bottles.

This would be a great giveaway for the whole family to participate in.

Who can enter?

US residents only.

How to win?

Sign up by Tuesday 1/5/10, 11:59pm

You have three chances; make sure to leave your e-mail address so I can e-mail you if you are the winner.

Three ways to enter:

1. Leave a comment on how you help the earth (recycle, reuse bags, use reusable water bottles instead of disposable, etc).

2. View the video on the clean water packets, the kids will think this is great. Then come back and let me know what you thought of the video.

3. Donate at least $1 and let me know that you made a donation. Wouldn't that be great if everyone just donated $1.

I will be selecting the winner Wednesday morning on 1/6/10. I will e-mail the winner and they will have 48 hours to respond. The winner will be selected by Random.org. Product will be shipped directly from the promoter.

WinCo Foods Bulk Bin Shopping

I wanted to talk about the bulk bin section at WinCo Foods. I would normally pass by that section all the time. I figured it was the candy and nut section. I have occasionally picked up some spices before, but I never explored that section until the other day. I actually couldn't believe all the people in that section, I really never noticed (shame on me).

I was really surprised at the additional savings I would be saving by purchasing some of my items in the bulk bin section. I think the first thing is to start with a few items at first. Gather up storage containers at the dollar store, Wal-Mart, and Costco. Costco has some great canisters and pasta containers. They look really nice in your kitchen also.

Winco had some little containers for nuts and spices ranging in price from $.84 -$1.32. I would suggest for the spices to save your spice jars that you already have and when you run out, go to the bulk section, purchase your spice, and then fill it up in your jar at home. They will already be marked with the ingredient and everything.

For my first few items I purchased was popcorn $.61 lb, Wow. My husband makes popcorn almost every night. Then I purchased a few raw hide bones for my dogs, that was a really good price also. I was excited to see such items as: country gravy mix, brown gravy mix, cheese sauce mix, instant potatoes, chex mix, trail mix, corn nuts, brownie mix, pizza crust mix, etc. These all come with instructions and recipes. I was excited to open up more opportunities to my cooking world.

The next thing I need to do is comparison shop. Compare bulk prices to items on the shelf. As I gather up prices I will start tracking them against my bulk section pricing. I will then make the note on my weekly pricing if it's cheaper to buy in the bulk section. How exciting!!!

Here are some of the prices I gathered up. I didn't write down everything so I will try to keep adding to my list. I will start a new label/tab for WinCo Bulk Section on my blog so you can click on it and see the bulk prices.

Franz and Oroweat Outlet Shopping Trip

I needed to stock up on my bread and snack supplies. I am thankful that the Franz and Oroweat Outlets are just a couple blocks apart from each other so I can go to both stores in one day.

I save so much money by going to the outlet stores. When I see the bread we eat are in stores for almost $3.00 a loaf, I can't believe how much bread is at the stores.

Here is what I purchased at Oroweat:

6 loaves of Oroweat Buttermilk Bread ($1.19 each)
2 packages of hamburger buns ($2.00)
1 package 12ct of Oroweat's sandwich thins (only 100 calories) $2.19

Oroweat items freeze really well because they are packaged with double bagging. Items that are not bagged like that I put inside freezer bags.

Total: $11.33

My Franz shopping for snacks (daddy likes snacks in his lunchbox - no eating out for him!)

2 boxes Hostess Zingers ($3.00)
4 boxes Little Debbie Snacks ($5.00)
5 fruit pies snacks ($3.90)
2 packages hamburger buns ($2.00)

Total $13.90

Here's a hint for you: when the roads are really bad and the trucks can't get around from city to city the outlet stores receive tons of items because they aren't able to get the fresh items in the stores fast enough so they have to take them to the outlet store. You can pick up some great deals because the outlet stores are filled with items.

A Frugal Mom's Day After Christmas Shopping

Successful Shopping at WinCo Foods

I have been shopping at WinCo for years and I wanted to share with you some tips on how to save at WinCo. (just a reminder WinCo doesn't pay me to shop there - I wish. This is just my advice to help people save money).

  • WinCo shoppers need to know prices and when the items are at their lowest. WinCo changes their prices on most items about every couple of weeks. They will hit the lowest about every 2 or 3 months. Dairy and meat products change the most. Milk and eggs stay about the same. I have seen prices fluctuate from $1 to $3 on one item. The chicken strips I normally buy are about $3.98 - $4.98, this week they were $7.98. I won't buy them until they come down in price. It will probably be a couple of weeks, then I will start stocking up.

  • Start a price book. For the items you normally buy start a price book. You can take it in the store and write down the prices or do it at home from your receipt. After a couple months you will really start to know your prices. Now, swing into another store and take a look at the prices of the items you normally buy. You won't believe the difference. The one item I can't believe is Tillamook cheese 2lb block. Albertson's and Yoke's will sell them for $9.99 and at Winco it's normally $5.98. This is a staple item for us and I can't image spending $10 for something we go through all the time. After you know your prices you no longer need to keep a price book. I really thought I new prices until I started one; I was amazed. Now I know the lowest prices off the top of my head.

  • Know when to stock up. Now that you are keeping a price book and know your prices, stock up when items hit their lowest. Use your freezer and pantry. When items hit their lowest grab about 4 to 6 weeks worth. Some of the things I stock up on is Ball Park Franks (~$2 stock up) and Tillamook Udderly Chocolate ice cream (~$3.38 stock up). I have a freezer in our shop so I will stock up and keep them in the extra freezer. WinCo normally will keep their prices for a couple weeks so you have time to stock.

  • Coupons. WinCo in Richland, WA takes printables, some of the others don't. Ask the manager if your store takes them. Coupons can really lower the prices when you shop at WinCo. I was picking up Yoplait Plus Yogurt for $1. They were on sale for $2 and I had a bunch of $1/1 coupons. I know when you only have $3 in coupons you think why bother? Well I look at my cart and see something that is $3 and I figure I got that for free. Or look at the overall price I paid for that item, like my yogurt for $1. I purchase coupons from The Coupon Clippers on a regular basis. That way I have several coupons of the items I purchase on a regular basis. This is great for the WinCo stores that don't take printables.

  • Your receipt. WinCo's receipts don't really help you to know how much money you really saved because they don't list sale prices. That does bother me because you don't feel like you saved much; but my suggestion is take a field trip to another store like Albertson's and write down the prices of the items you just purchased at WinCo. You will be totally shocked on how much money you saved just shopping there. I can leave the store with a cart full of groceries for $75 and at Albertson's I would have spent about $130 or more.

  • Shopping at other stores. I shop at Albertson's and Safeway for the sales that I know are cheaper than WinCo due to the promotion they are holding and the coupons I have to go along with the promotion. Such as this week at Albertson's I will use my doublers on: Goodnight pull ups $9.99, $1/1 coupon and use the doubler = $7.99, M&M's 2 for $4, $1/1 coupon with a doubler = 2 for $2.
I hope this information will help you out. You can also apply this to any store your shop at on a regular basis. In the beginning of learning how to shop smart it takes a little time but once you have these basics down-pat it becomes second nature.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Snuggle for $2.50 at Big Lots!

Yesterday I went to Big Lots to see about some sheets for my bed and I also needed fabric softener. I use Snuggle. I purchased the huge container last time for $10 and I think it was 150 load container. This time I had to use the change in my purse and I found Snuggle 2X 32oz 40 loads for $2.50. Normally they are $3.99 or more.

Even though Big Lots does not take coupons they have some really good deals. I go in there from time to time and stock up on low priced items. On pay day I will have to go back and buy more fabric softener.

$5 dinner for a family of 4 - items purchased at WinCo Foods

WinCo $5 Bargain Meals - all ingredients purchased at WinCo Foods

I am happy to participate in the $5dollar dinners Bargain Meal of the Week.
For more of my $5 meals to go Bargain Meals and 1 trip, 1 bag, 5 dinners

My mom gave me this recipe:

Slow Cooker Chicken Ole' (recipe serves 8)

Ingredients:

1 can cream of mushroom $.58
1 can cream of chicken $.97
1 cup sour cream $.54
2 tbsp grated onion ~$.10
2 cups grated cheddar cheese (divided)$1.25 (grated from the 2lb block of Tillamook cheese)
12 flour tortillas, each torn into about 8 pieces $1.68
3-4 cups of cubed, cooked chicken $2.18lb (cut up and cook)
7oz salsa $1.15

In a bowl combine soups, sour cream, onion, 1 1/2 cups of cheese.

Place 1/3 of each of the following in layers into a slow cooker: torn tortillas, soup mixture, chicken, and salsa, repeat layers 2 more times.

Cover. Cook on low for 4-5 hours. This does not cook well on high.

Gently stir. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup cheese. Cover. Cook on low another 15-30 minutes.

Serve with tortilla chips and lettuce, and/or Spanish rice.

Total $4.23 for a family of 4 and a total of $8.45 for the whole recipe serving 8. This is under $5 a meal for a family of 4 per night for two nights or lunches.
