$5 Bargain Meals - Taco Pizza

WinCo $5 Bargain Meals - all ingredients purchased at WinCo Foods
I am happy to participate in the 5 dollar dinners Bargain Meal of the Week.
For more low budget meals to go Bargain Meals and 1 trip, 1 bag, 5 dinners
Taco Pizza (serves 6)

1 lb. ground beef ($1.98 lb)
Taco seasoning ($.38 McCormick)
Taco chip pieces (get from the bottom of your Taco Chip bag, I save the bottom of the bag for these recipes)
Leonardi's pizza dough (already made dough in the cheese aisle $1.48)
1 cup shredded cheese (Hy-Top $1.00)
1 cup of shredded lettuce ($.50)
1 large tomato, chopped (~$.35)

COOK meat with Taco Seasoning Mix as directed on package. Roll out pizza dough (I put a little corn meal on the bottom of the pan so the dough doesn't stick). Spoon meat onto pizza dough; top with cheese. Place directly on oven rack.

BAKE on 400 degrees for about 12 to 15 min. or until crust is golden brown and cheese is melted.

TOP with lettuce and tomatoes. Crush Taco Shells; sprinkle over pizza. Drizzle with Salsa.

If you like refried beans put a little bit on the pizza dough before you put on the meat.  It's so good.

Total $5.69 for a family of 4 with a little left over for lunch

Spring Break, Easter, and Blogging

My kids are on spring/Easter break right now so you may notice I haven't been posting too much.  We have school projects to get done, cleaning around the house, Easter, and just general running around.  I will try to jump on the computer when I can, but my son and I have to take turns with the computer.

I hope everyone has a great Spring Break and Easter.

How do I do it? WinCo Sale Prices

Many of you have asked how do I get my WinCo numbers and make a price sheet.  Well it's really the old fashion way.

I have a spreadsheet that I add the coupons to when I receive them in the Sunday paper.  I found that it's less frustrating then using the information from Sunday Coupon Review because we don't receive everything listed and I would get so mad when I would go to get a coupon and then realized another part of the country must have received it and we didn't. I take my spread sheet into the store and find the item and right down the price.I also write down the items in the Value Aisle.

I talked to the manager and he told me that prices change all the time but the majority is on Thursdays. So on Thursdays (sometimes Sundays) I go to WinCo, do my shopping, write down the prices and check to see if any has changed (which they do all the time) and then go home and update my Google Spread sheet.

I know people see me and wonder what I'm doing. If you are at the Richland, WA WinCo on Thursday afternoons and see a coupon lady writing down numbers that's me! Say "hey are you the coupon lady?" I see several people on a regular basis. It's a lot of fun.

It takes about about 1 1/2 hours to shop and write down numbers each week (at the same time I gather the prices for my $5 dinner recipes).  For so many years I wanted to see a WinCo Flier but I never thought I would be the one to put one together.  I am happy to be able to help so many people save money. My guess is WinCo shoppers save about 25% and when you add coupons we save even more.

I do shop at Albertson's and Safeway as well; but for only their sale items that I know are cheaper than WinCo due to the fact that they are running a promotion. The majority of my shopping is done a WinCo.  Our Richland WinCo is very nice and clean.  I have been shopping there since it has opened.  The Kennewick store is not as nice as the Richland Store.

It's my understanding that the WinCo prices should all be pretty similar, there might be a few cents difference but they should be pretty close.

That's how I do it. Match up coupons and type it up. Nothing fancy.

Thank you for the letters of appreciation that makes it so worth it to know people appreciate it.

What to do with leftover meat in the refrigerator

I had a bunch of leftover shredded chicken, pork, and taco meat in the refrigerator but it wasn't enough to make a dish using one type of meat so I decided to make a bunch of taquitos with all the meat. It worked out great.  We had chicken, beef, and pork taquitos for dinner and the remaining taquitos my son heats up in the microwave for breakfast.

Here is my recipe for the taquitos.

Albertson's Doublers on Sunday

Rumor has it that in Sunday's paper there should be some Albertson's Doublers so you might want to wait to shop at Albertson's until Sunday.

After Game Snacks

We started soccer recently and this week it's our turn to bring snacks. I try to pay attention to what the kids like but keeping it somewhat healthy. I decided to take several different boxes of the 100 calorie snack packs and let the kids choose which ones they want (they are on sale at Safeway right now 2 for $4) and in the cooler I will have individual Tillamook cheese packs (from Costco) and Capri Sun.  I'm hoping the kids will like them, as well as the parents.

I have read several articles on different snack ideas so I put together a list of snack options that might be helpful.

  • Mini pretzel packs
  • Grapes (put in individual bags)
  • Squeeze yogurt (freeze ahead of time)
  • Mini bagels with cream cheese
  • Goldfish crackers
  • Watermelon chunks
  • Cheese Sticks
  • Cheez-It packs
  • Strawberries
  • Rice Krispie treats
  • Cheese and cracker packs
  • Sun Chips
  • Teddy Grahams
  • Granola bars
  • Trail mix packets (Costco,  older kids)
  • Beef Jerky packs (Costco, older kids)
I like to bring a couple different things so the kids can pick something they like; not everyone likes the same thing.

If you use my blog along with the blogs I follow you will find ways to save so much money. I try to bring you store savings, recipes, and other savings that I don't see on another sites.  I haven't been posting free items due to the fact that I haven't recieved very many that I have signed up for.

I hope you find my site useful and unique. My goal is to try to bring you more articles as well.  I have been so busy the past couple of weeks I haven't had the time to put them together; but they are on my to do list.

My Shopping for 3/14 - 3/20

So far this year I have saved $1012.86!

My monthly budget for our family of 4 is $500 (this includes food, cleaning, personal hygiene, and pets). I try to stay around $125 a week.  Here's how I did:

$500 for the month
$387.44 spent
$214.28 saved
$112.56 balance for this week (week 4).

Spending for week 3/14 - 3/20 I try to stay about $125 for the week
$125.00 for the week
$132.62 Spent
$88.81 Saved
-$7.62 over budget (pretty close though)

I had been really busy this week so I didn't take pictures of my shopping trips.  I would get home and put the groceries away really quick and move on the the next thing on my list. With Spring here is seems I'm really busy with all the household chores. I did complete the task of organizing my son's closet by putting up shelves and bins.  It looks so nice I hope it can stay that way.  Now it's time to go through his containers of toys.

$5 Dinner Bargain Meals - Vegetable Egg Fajitas

WinCo $5 Bargain Meals - all ingredients purchased at WinCo Foods
I am happy to participate in the 5 dollar dinners Bargain Meal of the Week.
For more low budget meals to go Bargain Meals and 1 trip, 1 bag, 5 dinners

Vegetable Egg Fajitas (Serves 4)

Ingredients:

6 eggs ($.74)
1/3 cup milk ($~.20)
1 tablespoon margarine or butter($.10)
1 medium bell pepper, cut into 1/4-inch strips ($.88)
1 medium onion, thinly sliced ($.54)
1 tablespoon fajita seasoning mix (from 1-oz package) (Hy-Top package is $.40, use about $.10)
4 flour tortillas for burritos (8 inch; from 11-oz package) (Reesers 10 for $2.38, use $.95)
1/2 cup Thick 'n Chunky salsa (Pace, $.89)

Directions:
Beat eggs and milk with fork; set aside.

In 12-inch skillet, melt margarine over medium-high heat. Cook bell pepper, onion and seasoning mix in margarine about 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are tender. Remove vegetables from skillet; keep warm.

Reduce heat to medium; pour egg mixture into skillet. As mixture begins to set at bottom and side, gently lift cooked portions with spatula so that thin, uncooked portions can flow to bottom. Avoid constant stirring. Cook 3 to 4 minutes or until eggs are firm but still moist.

Spoon one-fourth of the egg mixture onto center of each tortilla; top with vegetables. Fold right and left sides of tortilla over mixture, overlapping. Top each fajita with 2 tablespoons salsa.

Total $4.40,  Serve with Knorr Spanish Rice for $.85; bacon (Bar S on sale for $1.78) or sausage (Jimmy Dean $1.23 with coupon) if there are meat lovers in your family.

Thank you to Betty Crocker for this recipe

$25 Restaurant Gift Certificates for $2 - we used ours

We went to Kimo's Bar and Grill (Richland, WA) for dinner last night.  I bought a $25 gift certificate for $2 (80% off) on Restaurant.com using code COOK (expires on 3/31).  Our bill came to $12.24 (including the $2 for the gift certificate), cheaper than fast food and a better way to spend family time.  We went early so it was more of a family atmosphere. When using the $25 gift certificate you need to have a minimum purchase of $35, ours was actually $32.71 and they went ahead and used it. We could have ordered a dessert to share if we had to.

To see our review on Kimo's go to Bailey and Shayla's Review Blog.

I'm going to buy a couple more today.  I wanted to use one before I blogged about it and bought more. We had no problem using it.

My Shopping 3/7 - 3/13

I'm always a little curious how much people spend and what they bought. You can take a look at what I spent and what I bought - I'm not shy about it.

$500 budget for the month
$254.82 spent
$125.47 saved
$245.18 balance

I'm saving about 50%. But most of my shopping is at WinCo and the receipt doesn't reflect items picked up on sale so I'm sure I have saved more than that.

Here's my shopping for the week:

$125.00 week budget
$120.57 spent
$31.75  saved (that was recorded on the receipt.  I shopped at WinCo, Big Lots, Costco so the saving isn't listed but I know purchased those items at the lowest price)
I was under $4.43!!

Keebler Nut crisps (these are good)
WinCo Bulk drink mix
WinCo Bulk Salt water taffy

E-mail from a California Reader

Thank you to Sandy in California!!!

Sandy from Central California took the time to let me know that she did some comparison shopping between my WinCo Food list from Richland, WA and her WinCo in California. It seems the prices don't vary too much.

 Here is her message:

I live in Central California, about 45 miles from Fresno. In order to make the most of my time & money, I usually stick to the stores that publish prices either in paper ads or online, in addition to a Sam's Club stop. However, today I finally took the time to go by Winco in search of a good buy on whole chickens, and to see if my local store prices were the same as the ones you list.

I thought you (and your CA readers), might be interested in what I learned. I did not check all of the prices. Just the items on my list. The items in the value aisle appeared to be about the same as those your list. There were a few differences in prices though.

Kettle Chips $2.48 (.01 cheaper in CA)
V8 Juice 46 oz $2.38 (.10 cheaper in CA)
Hy Top Tuna .48
Pillsbury Grands Biscuits $1.18
Bar S Bacon $1.78
Pillsbury Brownie Mix .78
2 pk Whole Chickens .88/lb (.09/lb higher in CA)
Del Monte &/or Hunt's Spaghetti Sauce .98 (.12 higher in CA)

French's Mustard @ $1.38 was Spicy Brown 12 oz.

No Deli Cooked Ham was on sale for $1.68/lb

The Pillsbury Grands! had a peelie coupon for $.55/1 Pillbury Refrigerated Cookie Dough which was $1.98 (.26 higher in CA--but the peelie helped!)

Generally, the prices seemed to be pretty close.

At the register, the clerk told me that they do not take printable coupons. I asked about how often their value aisle changes and she offered to call the manager to help me. He couldn't really give me an answer, except to say that it seems that they generally do the most price changes throughout the entire store on Sunday's, but they have some price changes nearly every day. He said that the value aisle changes depending on how fast the merchandise moves and how much stock they have in storage.

(I, NW Coupon Lady, also asked the store manager in Richland and he didn't know much about the prices either; he said that it seems they updated the Value Aisle on Thursdays and other things change all the time).

Since I had the manager there, I asked him about the printable coupons. He corrected the clerk and said that they DO accept printable coupons. He said that they do not see many of them and asked about where I get them.

Since he seemed interested and we were talking coupons, I asked whether they would take coupons from other stores websites and showed him a printable I happened to have from Save Mart Supermarket's website. He had never seen one, and said that he really didn't know, but that they probably would not take other stores' coupons. He said our conversation made him realize that they need to refresh their clerks on their coupon policy and actually thanked me for taking the time to talk coupons with him!

I, NW Coupon Lady, talked to the Richland ,WA store manager about taking other store's coupons and he said no.  I would suggest to ask your WinCo store manager if their store takes printable coupons. If you are checking out and a clerk says no they don't accept them, ask the clerk to call manager over to clarify the store procedure on printables.

Since I go in each week on the same day and time I know which clerks understand the store's policy on coupons.

Thank you so much to Sandy for the great information!!

New Grocery Outlet Opening in Kennewick WA!!

I received a flier in the mail that in Kennewick WA (4th and Olympia) there is now a Grocery Outlet! I'm so excited to see what it's all about.

The Grand Opening is Saturday, March 20th but by the website it looks like it might have opened today. I clicked on their flier and the effective date showed 3/10 - 3/16.   I don't live close by, but I will try to make a special trip to check it out. If anyone stops by the store let me know.

I'm excited to see the difference between Grocery Outlet and WinCo.

Costco Vs WinCo Foods

I have been shopping a little more at Costco and since I know my store prices pretty well I wanted to comparison shop on some of the things that seem cheaper at Costco.  Here was the first one I found:

Frigo String Cheese:

Costco $9.49/60ct that is $.16 each piece
WinCo Foods $4.36/16 that is $.27 each piece

so if you purchased 60 at WinCo at $.27 that would be: $16.20 at WinCo vs $9.49 at Costco; you save $6.71 at Costco!

Yes, sometimes you can use your coupons, doublers, or purchase them when they on sale and pick it up cheaper, but if you are purchasing them at regular price Costco is the winner.

*I hope I had all my math right*

3 Coupon Inserts - Wow!

There are three coupon inserts in today's paper (Tri-City Herald). What I normally do is buy one paper, check out the coupons and if it's worth buying another one I will. I still haven't filed my coupons from last week.  I hate when I get behind.
