Become a Smart Albertson's Shopper

Thank you to The Krazy Coupon Lady for this great article on being successful at Albertson's. This is a great help for people new to this wonderful savings game.

Secrets to Success at Albertson's by The Krazy Coupon Lady

Want to get Krazy at Albertsons? You'll have to wait for what we call The Perfect Storm! This happens when there is a promotion with sale items, manufacturer coupons, a Catalina promo, and Double Coupons! Do I have your head spinning yet? Allow me to explain...

Albertsons run 2 different kinds of great Promotions!

First: the 'Save Instantly Promo'
Example: Spend "$20", Save "$5" Instantly.
The register instantly deducts $5 after you spend $20 (total before coupons) on participating products and scan your preferred card. You may take advantage of this promo multiple times in one transaction.
Example: If you spend $40 on participating products, the register will deduct $10 (twice in $5 increments)

Second: the 'OYNO Promo'
Example: Spend $20, Save $5 On your next order (OYNO)
Your total before coupons is $20, then present any coupons and pay. With your receipt your cashier will hand you a catalina coupon worth $5.00 off your next order. These Catalinas can be rolled. This means you can do one transaction, receive the Catalina, do another identical transaction, Pay with the first Catalina and a new Catalina will still print. Often,
OYNO promo's can potentially be 'moneymakers'. If you get your out of pocket price to be very low with coupons, then you can make money because you will receive the Catalina your next order.
Example: $20.00 pre coupon total, present $17.00 worth of coupons. Out of pocket $3.00 and receive a catalina for $5.00 off your next order. We call this a moneymaker.

Albertsons Store Coupons

Double Coupons

Albertson's has In-Ad Coupons that can be matched with manufacturer coupons for additional Savings. Some of the In Ad Coupons found at Albertson's are "Twice the Value" Coupons or Doublers. Doublers are good on any manufacturer coupon up to $1 in Value. So, if you use a $1 manufacturer coupon, and then the doubler- they will take off another $1. If you have a coupon for $1.01 or $1.50 etc., they will NOT (or should not) take an additional $1 off.

You may use one manufacturer coupon and one store coupon per item. Since the Doubler is a Store Coupon- You can not use it in conjunction with another In-Store Coupon. For example- If there is a In-Store coupon (in their ad) you can not use that coupon and a doubler- since that is technically 2 store coupons (just like you can't use 2 manufacturer coupons on 1 item).

If you are buying an item for $1.88 and you have a $1 manufacturer coupon- and a Albertson's Doubler- THEY HAVE TO ADJUST THE DOUBLER DOWN TO $.88.

Regarding coupons that read "Do Not Double":
We are forced with no other alternative than to do what each store individual allows. 'Do not Double' is written on coupons by manufacturers who want to make it poignantly clear that they will not be reimbursing the store for any more than the value of the coupon. When Albertsons puts out a "double coupon", the value of the 'doubled' portion of the coupon is never reimbursed. Albertsons is sacrificing it's price margin by putting out those coupons in return for your business and patronage. Albertsons should not care whether or not a coupon reads "do not double", but it is their prerogative to refuse them.

Common mistakes and answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Albertsons:

1. When doing a promo, Make sure you reach the minimum 'spend amount' before coupons and tax! If you are supposed to spend $20 and you are at $19.99 before tax you will not receive the savings.
2. Catalina is a third party marketing company that offers both manufacturer coupons and Albertsons in-store coupons. The coupons are triggered by purchasing qualified items at checkout which generate a coupon to print on the Catalina printer. Catalina may be contacted at1-888-826-8766 for any questions about redemption and/or if a coupon fails to print within a transaction.
3. Albertson's Sales run on a Wednesday to Tuesday Cycle.
4. When there are 2 sets of doublers from 2 different sources all of them can be used in one transaction. Read the following from Albertson's Corporate "Going forward when we have Wednesday doubler coupons and Sunday doubler coupons.: Wednesday through Saturday we will accept the number of coupons from the Wednesday ad in a single transaction. Sunday - Tuesday we will accept the total from Wednesday and the additional coupons in the Sunday ad in a single transaction."

My Great Albertson's Deal

7/26/09 Albertson's Snack Attack!

I bought 7 packages of Keebler Cookies for $2.50 each I had printable coupons 3 - $1.00, and 1 $.55 (if the coupons hadn't reached the limit I would have printed more) I used Albertson's three double coupons at $1.00 each (found in the newspaper)
1 16 pack of Rice Krispies treats $5.79

I used my $10 catalina from a previous purchase, Total OOP was $6.74 with a $10 catalina for my next trip. I also received $2 catalina off next purchase of meat of $10 or more (which I will use) and a $2 off $10 of produce.

At home I leave out a couple packages of cookies and hide the rest so the family doesn't go wild.

Just Pay Half

We have some businesses in our local area (Tri-Cities, WA) that you can purchase gift certificates at 1/2 price. I purchase these all the time and keep them for gifts or when we are low on money and we want to go out. Here are the sites I follow:

Two for Tuesdays (KNDU station)
1/2 Price Fridays (94.9 the Wolf)
Dollar Deals on Tuesdays (Fox 11) Currently there is a $50 for $25 at Red Apple Market. This isn't the nicest store but you save half price. Here's the current flier.

If you do not live in my area search the net under IncentRev. This is the company that promotes this marketing strategy. This is how I found out about additional sites in my area. We save hundreds of dollars a year.

Meal #1

1 tsp minced garlic ~$.15
4 tsp butter $.20
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce $.10
1 lb shaved deli Roast Beef $2.98 (on sale)
6 slices of colby jack cheese $1.43

Bake garlic bread according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, saute mushrooms, onion, and garlic in butter until vegs are tender. Stir in Worcestershire sauce.

Layer each half of garlic bread with roast beef (heat a little bit in the microwave), mushroom mixture, and cheese. Return to oven and bake 1-2 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Slice and serve.

This serves 6, so for a dinner of 4 the Total is $5.16 (serve with one of the Reesers salads that are on sale add $.80). Total price for six is $7.72. The family can have dinner and leftovers for lunch the next day.

Cut each bell pepper in half lengthwise, removed seeds and stems. Set aside.

In a large bowl, combine 1 cup tomato sauce, rice mix, special seasoning, ground beef, and egg. Stuff peppers halves evenly with beef mixture.

In large skillet, arrange pepper halves meat-side down. Pour remaining tomato sauce and 1 1/2 cups water evenly over peppers. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium. Cover, simmer 35 minutes or until meat is done and rice is tender. Serve peppers with remaining tomato sauce mixture from skillet.

Albertson's Dr. Pepper Deal - didn't work

I tried the Albertson's Dr. Pepper deal that has been reported and in Richland, WA it did not work. The buzz was that Dr. Pepper was ringing up a buy 2 get 2 free, then will the Dr. Pepper promotion if you bought $20 you would receive $10 Catalina. When I tried it they were not ringing up the two for free, the cashier kept trying, at that time the manager told me/us the Dr. Pepper was excluded from the 2 for 2 because Dr. Pepper has it's own promotion. So I decided not to buy them. Bummer.

7 Simple Ways to Save on Groceries
By: Elizabeth McGuirk of Frugally Blonde, Living the Good Life on Less

Today I am sharing some very simple, easy ways to start reducing your grocery bill. These ideas are great for beginners, because they take a minimal amount of time and effort, and they are also a great reminder for anyone of the basics of saving money.

1) Choose a grocery budget and stick to it. This is probably the number one way to save on really anything: deciding that you won’t spend more than a certain amount. Start with a very realistic budget, just a little lower than what you usually spend. Then keep track of your shopping each week or month and don't spend over that amount, even if you have to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the last few days of the month!

2) Plan meals. Don't go to the grocery store and just buy whatever looks good. Actually sit down and go over your schedule and see what meals you'll be eating and what ingredients you need. When I started seriously doing this, I was amazed to find how little I actually needed to buy for each week. If planning all your meals seems daunting, just write down dinners for one Monday through Friday and work up from there.

3) Shop with a list and stick to it. After you've planned your meals, make a detailed list and stick to it. Don't forget items for breakfast, lunches, and snacks, as well as beverages, paper products, cleaning products - anything you normally buy at a grocery or big box store. This practice has the added benefit of reducing trips to the store for forgotten items, which further reduces the chance of impulse buying.

4) Start clipping coupons. I could write a lot about couponing, but getting started really doesn't take much effort or explanation. Simply buy a Sunday newspaper each week and start looking for coupons on items you were going to buy anyway. If you find a $.50 coupon on the brand of cereal you always buy, and your store doubles it (which many do), then that little slip of paper is a dollar in your pocket. Once you are comfortable using a few coupons here and there, you can move on to matching them with sales and other coupon strategies.

5) Stock up on sales. Most people have probably done this at some time or other. You've noticed that your favorite cereal is on sale, so you've bought three boxes. It's definitely a good idea to do this, with a couple of caveats. First, don't buy ten boxes of cereal if it's not in your budget. It will save you more money in the long run to stick to a budget than to save a couple of dollars on cereal one month. Also, remember that many items go on sale regularly, so there's no need to buy ten if it will go on sale again in six weeks.

6) Consider generics - In my opinion, it is definitely worth it to try the generic brand on pretty much anything. You can always switch back, but you might save a considerable amount of money without even noticing by, for instance, buying generic canned tomatoes.

7) Think outside the box - Challenge the way you have been thinking about shopping and spending money. I have always been a frugal person, but when I examined my grocery budget last summer I found that I was acting on a lot of premises that could be challenged. For instance, did my husband have to have name brand chips and salsa, or would he be perfectly fine with the generic brand? (It was the latter.) Did I need to keep my pantry stocked with certain items, or should I just buy them when I was planning to use them in a recipe? Should I buy this item just because it's on sale or is it better to just spend less money this week?

Swimming Pool Games

Do you have a swimming pool for your kids? We have an above ground pool we purchased at Costco three years ago and my kids play in it everyday. I found if they have games to play in the pool they tend to get along better, unless they start to fight about the game of course. Here are some fun games they can play.

Go on a Treasure Hunt. Toss coins, or any type of "treasure items" in the pool; whoever brings up the most “treasure” in five minutes wins.

Try to catch a Butterfinger Ball. Slather a beach ball with sunscreen then toss it up in the air and see how long everyone in the pool can keep it out of the water.

Play catch. One person stands at the edge of the diving board. Just as they spring off, throw them a ball to try to catch in mid-air. We have a trampoline next to our above ground pool they use to jump in the pool.

Have a laugh with Pop the Piranha. Toss a water balloon in the pool and encourage kids try to pop it while it’s wet. It’s nearly impossible! My kids love this game.

These ideas and more can be found at All You online.
